Brief History and Establishment of CRR
The Faculty of Economics at Shiga University has served as a leading national institution in Economics and Business in Japan for 80 years. This institution has gained a reputation in training a large number of business leaders of major Japanese corporations at the CEO and Managerial level, as well as training and educating managers of many small to medium scale businesses. The university is located within Shiga prefecture which itself has had a long history concerning business and commerce. Well before Japan's period of modernization, Shiga prefecture was regarded as the home of OHMI merchants or commerce specialists.At present, the Faculty of Economics has 2,500 students and 120 faculty members. Approximately 200 students study at the graduate school, which also includes international students from more than 24 countries.
In 2003, the university celebrated its 80th anniversary. To mark this special occasion, the university established a doctorate program in Economics, Finance and Business Administration, which exclusively focuses on Risk Analysis and Management. This is believed to be the first program of its kind in the entire Asian region. Secondly, it also established a new kind of research center aimed at fulfilling the contemporary and changing needs of the business community. The alumni society, RYOSUI-KAI, which continuously supports all of the university activities, raised the entire funding necessary for the establishment of this new research center named the Center for Risk Research at Shiga University.
Goals of the Center and Main Area of Activities
The Center's mission focuses primarily on the following goals:
★Encourage research projects and activities related to risk and uncertainty in economics and management
★Disseminate the research outcomes in order to deepen and broaden our understanding of importance of RISK in the business decision-making and planning
★Develop more reliable means to assess various risk-related factors
★Utilize the research outcomes to integrate with the educational goals at the college
